Generational Leadership Workshop

If you manage, lead, hire or supervise Millennials, this is one workshop you can’t afford to miss.

The issue of how to motivate and lead the newest crop of workers has been top of mind for many organizations. Immigration is one way for Nova Scotian companies and organizations to find the skilled workers they may need.

If you're interested in learning more about the opportunities and benefits that immigration provides to businesses, we would like to invite you to join Nova Scotian Immigration Minister Lena Metlege-Diab, the Nova Scotia Office of Immigration, and settlement provider organizations on April 24 for a free information session.

We'll also have information on the new Atlantic Immigration Pilot. This innovative program - part of the federal government's Atlantic Growth Strategy - was developed to simplify the immigration process for both immigrants and employers to better help businesses fill labour gaps so that they, and our economy, can prosper quicker.

Workplace Education: Office Suite Beginner

This course is designed for the user who has little to no experience with the Microsoft Office Suite. The course would demonstrate the uses of the components of the office suite. Topics may include:


Outlook – Exploring the use of Outlook as an email and contact manager. Working with Contacts, managing email, creating folders working with attachments, using the Calendar, and other topics as required.
Word – How to use Word as a Word processor. How to format text, default Word options, document setup, document views, working with templates managing your files, inserting graphics, bulleted and numbered lists, using Styles, and working with tabs.
Excel - Introducing the Excel interface, entering data, absolute and relative cell reference, creating simple formulas, inserting and removing columns and rows, copying moving and auto-fill, formatting the worksheet, print preview and printing.
Power Point – What is Power Point used for? Slide basics, creating your first presentation, inserting transitions and animations, working with images, setting up timings, text boxes and smart art, printing a slide show.
One Note – Using One Note as a notes organizer
Publisher - A brief look at Publisher to create flyers and or brochures.

Workplace Eduation: Office Suite Intermediate

An Intermediate course if for those who have taken the Beginner Microsoft Office Course or who have been using the programs for some time and need to update their skills or learn more advanced uses of the Office Suite.
Topics may include:


Outlook – Creating rules, organizing meetings using the Calendar, searching emails, creating signatures, managing junk mail, using the ToDo List, creating tasks, creating notes, creating contact groups,
Word – Advanced Styles, mail merge, label merge, using advanced tabs, creating multilevel lists, using track changes, introduction to building blocks, headers and footers, creating fillable forms, watermarks, and linking objects from other programs.
Excel – Using functions, date formulas, using charts, linking charts, conditional formatting, using mixed relative and absolute cell references, smart art and graphics, and sorting and filtering.
Power Point – Working with Slide masters, custom animations, working with pictures, removing picture backgrounds, using Power Point to create documents other than Presentations, publishing presentations, saving templates, creating and saving themes, and working with bulleted lists.
It should be noted that these are a few suggested topics. All courses are customized to meet the needs of the participants.

Our Young Business Leaders (YBL) have organized a work placement event with NSCC Kingstec.

The event takes place on February 13th from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm, at the Kingstec NSCC campus. You'll be welcomed along with a number of other local businesses looking to hire these students.

You as a business owner in the Annapolis Valley can apply and interview NSCC students for a five-week unpaid (pay optional) work term this Spring and the insurance is covered by NSCC.

This is a great opportunity to inspire and invest in young local students and help take off some of the pressure on you as a small business owner.

By completing the curriculum and the associated in-class and at-home exercises, the program participants will be able to:

  • Define and maintain their position in the marketplace
  • Identify their direct and indirect competition
  • Recognize their limits and when to outsource
  • Understand marketing channels and options
  • React and respond to the Voice of the Customer (VoC)
  • Develop a cross media marketing campaign
  • Implement a campaign and stay within budget
  • Convert contacts and leads to sales

This is a very collaborative program and requires active involvement from the participant. The delivery of the program is illustrated with current examples from businesses and how they managed to achieve the success they enjoy. The course will explore the consistent principles of successful marketing and apply those principles to achieve measurable goals for each business represented in the classroom.

Workplace Education: Change Management

Managing change can initially be divided into two categories: The change in process and technology, and the human side. Both of these are addressed in this outline. The process tools and methods covered in this program are derived from Lean principles, project management and Six Sigma process improvement. All of which are used extensively from manufacturing through to health care to manage the actual logistics of any change. They are designed to provide concrete paths to get from ‘A’ to ‘B’.
